What it is
CC Signals is a framework from Creative Commons that lets holders of content or data express “how I want AI to use my work” — centered on reciprocity, recognition and sustainability. Introduced in 2025 and revised in April 2026, it shifted from “merely expressing a preference” toward the stronger stance of treating attribution as a requirement.
Why it matters to you
It sits in the “AI access preferences” layer, the same family as robots and Cloudflare Content Signals. If you care that “AI may use my content, but it must cite the source,” this is the relevant signaling mechanism — and being cited by AI is itself one of the outcomes GEO is after.
Should you act now
Just be aware it exists. It’s still in pilot, still evolving, has no enforcement teeth, and whether AI engines will honor it is unknown. You don’t need to change your site for it; what actually gets you cited is still the foundation — content that’s trustworthy enough and entity facts that are consistent enough.
